Alaska Woodturners Symposium, woodturning workshops and demonstrations

Where:

Alaska Woodturners Symposium, Anchorage, AK

Date:

On February 19th & 20th I will be leading hands-on workshops for the Alaska Woodturners Association. The subject of the class will be turning a shrink box, a lidded container turned from green wood. The bottom of the box is made from a separate piece of dry wood. As the body of the box dries the bottom is captured in a groove inside and is locked in place.

On February 21-23 I will be leading a hands-on workshop for the Alaska Woodturners Association. The subject of the class will be turning bowls from green wood. We will start with whole logs and complete bowls right off the lathe. Emphasis will be placed on using green wood as a material as well as proper use and sharpening of the deep fluted bowl gouge.

On February 24-25 I will be demonstrating various subjects at the Alaska Woodturners Symposium. I will cover turning hollow forms that I cut in half, hollow and glue back together, turning a shrink box, surface embellishment as well as a few other subjects.

Woodturning demonstrations and workshops at North House Folk School Wood Week

Woodturning demonstrations and workshops at North House Folk School Wood Week

Where:

North House Folk School, Grand Marais, MN

Date:

On March 12th-14th I will be leading a shrink box workshop. These boxes are turned on a lathe from green wood. The box is essentially a tube with a groove turned inside one end. A dry piece of wood is then carved to fit the shape of the inside of the box and place in the groove. When the box dries it shrinks and locks the bottom in place.

On March 16th-18th I will be leading a workshop on how I turn my hollow forms without working through the small opening of the top. Essentially I make a turned lidded box and glue the lid on. I do use green wood to make this vessel and I will cover all the essential techniques to successfully accomplish this type of hollowing.
